How Often Should You Clean Your Dryer Vent? (And the Warning Signs It’s Clogged)

Most people clean the lint trap every load and figure the dryer vent takes care of itself. It doesn’t. Every load pushes a little more lint past the trap and into the vent line that runs from your dryer to the outside of your house. Over time that lint builds up, the airflow slows down, and your dryer has to work harder to do the same job. Fall is a good time to think about it: heavier clothes, blankets, and extra laundry around the holidays mean your dryer is about to put in some of its hardest work of the year.

How often should it be cleaned?

For most homes, a professional dryer vent cleaning once a year is a sensible routine. Your home may need it sooner if any of these sound familiar:

  • A large household doing laundry most days
  • Pets, whose hair works its way into every load
  • A long vent run, or one with several bends, between the dryer and the outside wall
  • An older dryer that already dries more slowly than it used to

Think of it like the 6-to-12-month rhythm we recommend for carpets — regular maintenance is cheaper and easier than fixing a problem after it has built up.

Warning signs your vent is clogged

Your dryer usually tells you something is wrong before it stops working altogether. Watch for:

  • Clothes take longer to dry — loads that used to finish in one cycle now need a second one
  • The dryer feels very hot to the touch, or the laundry room gets hot and humid while it runs
  • A burning smell while the dryer is on — stop using it and get the vent checked
  • Lint collecting around the dryer or near the outside vent opening
  • The outside vent flap doesn’t open properly while the dryer is running, because the air can’t push through
  • Clothes come out unusually hot or with a musty smell

Any one of these is worth paying attention to. Two or three together almost always mean the vent line is restricted.

Why a clogged vent is a safety issue, not just an annoyance

Lint is flammable — that’s just what it is. A vent packed with lint sits right next to a heating element that gets hot enough to dry wet clothes, and the restricted airflow makes the dryer run hotter than it should. Clogged dryer vents are a well-known cause of house fires, which is why fire safety guidance consistently points to vent cleaning as basic home maintenance rather than an optional extra. Beyond safety, a restricted vent also means longer run times, higher energy use, extra wear on the dryer’s motor and heating element, and damp air that can leave moisture where you don’t want it. Cleaning the vent addresses all of that in a single visit.

What you can do — and what needs a pro

Keep doing the simple things: empty the lint trap after every load, look at the outside vent opening now and then to make sure it isn’t blocked by lint, leaves, or snow, and avoid overloading the machine. What those habits can’t do is reach the lint packed along the full length of the vent line, especially where it bends. That’s the part that matters most.

Our Dryer Vent Cleaning in Pasco service clears the entire line from the dryer to the exterior vent, and we re-check airflow before we leave so you know it’s venting properly. We also serve the rest of the area — see our Dryer Vent Cleaning in Kennewick and Dryer Vent Cleaning in Richland pages. Most vents are cleaned in a single visit, and we’ll walk you through what we found.

A simple fall habit

Put dryer vent cleaning on the same annual list as changing furnace filters and checking smoke alarms — once each fall, before the heavy laundry season starts. It’s a small job that protects your home, helps your dryer last longer, and usually means your clothes dry in one cycle again.
