Found Water Damage at Home? What to Do in the First Hour

Finding water where it doesn’t belong — a soaked carpet, a spreading ceiling stain, a supply line spraying behind the washing machine — is stressful. The good news is that what you do in the first hour makes a real difference to how much damage follows. You don’t need special equipment for the first steps. You need a calm order of operations: safety first, stop the water, protect what you can, then get help on the way.

Step 1: Think safety before anything else

Water and electricity are a dangerous mix. If water is near outlets, appliances, or your electrical panel, stay out of the area until you’re sure it’s safe. If you can reach your breaker panel without walking through water, shut off power to the affected rooms. Don’t use electrical appliances on wet floors, and don’t turn on ceiling lights if the ceiling is wet or sagging — a water-heavy ceiling can come down, so keep people and pets out from under it. If the water may involve sewage, such as a backed-up drain or toilet, keep clear of it entirely; that kind of water carries contaminants and is a job for professionals with protective equipment.

Step 2: Stop the water at the source

Everything else is cleanup until the flow stops. For an appliance, turn off its individual supply valve — usually on the wall behind a washing machine, dishwasher, or toilet. For a burst or leaking pipe, shut off the home’s main water supply; most Tri-Cities homeowners will find the main shutoff near where the water line enters the house or at the meter. If you can’t find or can’t turn the valve, call your water utility or a plumber — but call. Every extra minute of flow is more water in your walls, carpet, and padding.

Step 3: Protect your belongings

Once the water is stopped and the area is safe, move what you can:

  • Carry out electronics, documents, photos, and anything irreplaceable first
  • Move furniture out of the wet area, or lift it onto blocks, foil, or plastic tubs so legs aren’t sitting in water
  • Pull wet area rugs off the floor and drape curtains up off wet carpet
  • Blot carpet and mop hard floors with towels to remove standing water you can reach
  • Open doors and use fans if the area is safe electrically — moving air helps, though it won’t dry inside walls or under padding

Take a few photos of the damage as you go. They’re useful for your own records and for any conversation with an insurance company later.

What NOT to do

A few common instincts make things worse:

  • Don’t wait and see. Water keeps wicking into drywall, padding, and wood long after the puddle looks gone, and damp materials can develop mold sooner than most people expect.
  • Don’t use a regular household vacuum on standing water — it’s not built for it and it’s an electrical risk.
  • Don’t tear into walls or pull up carpet yourself. It feels productive, but proper drying has an order to it, and ripping things out blindly can turn a drying job into a replacement job.
  • Don’t crank up the heat to “bake it dry” — warmth without proper extraction and airflow can encourage the wrong kind of growth inside wall cavities.
