Should I Replace My Carpet or Clean It Again?

It’s the question we hear more than almost any other: “Should I replace my carpet, or just clean it again?”

Here’s why you can trust our answer — at Rendon Carpet & Floor Care, we do both. We clean carpet, and we install carpet. So we don’t make more money steering you one way or the other. We just tell you what we’d tell our own family, and this post is exactly how we make that call in your home.

Age Isn’t the Deciding Factor

Most people assume there’s a magic age where carpet is done. There isn’t.

We’ve seen 10-year-old carpet that’s been maintained well and still looks and feels great. We’ve also seen carpet that’s one year old and already looks ruined because it was neglected. Age alone doesn’t decide it — quality, fabric, and how it’s been cared for matter far more than the number on the calendar.

So instead of asking “how old is it?”, ask the questions below.

Signs Cleaning Won’t Save It

Professional cleaning is powerful, but it can’t reverse physical damage. These are the deal-breakers we look for:

  • High-traffic wear areas. When the fibers in walkways and main areas are worn down, crushed flat, or threadbare, that’s the carpet itself wearing out — not dirt. Cleaning removes soil; it can’t rebuild worn fiber.
  • Heavy colored stains. Deep, set-in colored staining often goes beyond what cleaning can reach.
  • Heavy pet smells. A strong, soaked-in pet odor usually means contamination has gone through the carpet into what’s underneath. Surface cleaning alone won’t fully remove it.

The Stains and Smells That Almost Never Come Out

Let’s be honest, because we’d rather set the right expectation than take your money under a false one:

  • Yellow-colored stains are by far the hardest to remove.
  • Cat urine odor is the toughest smell we deal with.

Real talk: about 99% of the time, these don’t come out completely. If a cleaner promises you they will, be skeptical. Sometimes we can improve them — but “gone like it never happened” is usually not realistic.

What About the Padding?

Good news: the padding is rarely the issue. It only really becomes a factor when you’re dealing with pet urine that’s soaked through, or bulges in the carpet. If neither of those is going on, the pad usually isn’t what’s making your carpet look tired.

Is There a Test You Can Do Yourself?

There’s no real home test for carpet life — other than vacuuming. Vacuum thoroughly, then look at the carpet honestly. If the traffic areas still look worn and flat and the stains are still staring at you after a proper vacuum, that’s your carpet telling you something. Dirt comes up. Damage doesn’t.

What Cleaning Costs vs. What Replacing Costs

A professional cleaning generally runs $60–$150 per room or area, depending on the size, the soil load, and any other issues going on. Our cleaning packages start at $60 per room — you can see the full breakdown in our post on how much carpet cleaning costs in the Tri-Cities.

Replacement is a different category altogether: new carpet, new pad, and installation. It’s the right call when the carpet is worn out — but it’s a much bigger project and a much bigger check. That’s why it’s worth knowing whether a $60–$150-per-room cleaning will genuinely bring your carpet back before you spend replacement money. Often, it will.

When We Honestly Tell People to Replace It

This happens, and we’re not shy about it. We’ll tell you not to pay us for a cleaning when:

  • The carpet has heavy wear in the main areas and walkways
  • There are tears in the carpet
  • There’s heavy pet urine contamination
  • And the expectation is that it will look close to perfect after the cleaning

If a cleaning can’t get you anywhere near what you’re picturing, we’d rather tell you up front and talk about replacement than take your money and disappoint you.

When Cleaning Is Absolutely the Right Call

If your carpet doesn’t have heavy stains, heavy wear, or heavy odors — clean it. That’s most carpet, honestly. A professional steam cleaning refreshes the fibers, pulls out the embedded soil, and buys you years more life out of the carpet you already paid for. Replacing carpet that’s just dirty is like replacing a car because it needs a wash.

The Tri-Cities Problem: Sand

Here’s something most national advice won’t tell you, because it’s specific to life here: sand.

The Tri-Cities has a ton of it. Sand gets tracked in, embeds itself deep into the carpet fibers, and then every step you take rubs it back and forth. It acts like sandpaper on the fibers, wearing the fabric out faster than normal. A carpet that might last 15 years somewhere else can wear out years sooner here if that sand just sits in it.

The best defense is simple: vacuum. Often, and with a good vacuum. Every pass pulls out the grit that’s grinding your carpet down from the inside.

If You Do Replace It, Make This One Last

When customers put in new carpet, here’s exactly what we tell them:

  1. Buy a good quality vacuum — cheap vacuums leave the sand behind.
  2. Vacuum often — in the Tri-Cities, this is the single biggest thing you can do.
  3. Get on a cleaning maintenance plan — professional cleaning every 6–12 months, depending on how much use the carpet gets (kids, pets, and traffic mean closer to 6).

Do those three things and your new carpet has a real shot at being that 10-year-old carpet that still looks great.

The Bottom Line

  • Worn fibers, tears, yellow stains, cat urine, heavy pet smell → lean replace
  • Dirty but intact — no heavy stains, wear, or odors → clean it and keep your money
  • Not sure → that’s literally what we’re here for
